  • The Winchfield Festival at The Barley Mow The Hurst Hook, England, RG27 8DE United Kingdom (map)

Tickets available here.

Join us for our debut performance at the Winchfield Festival with Grounds for Exchange, a programme exploring the musical conversation between Italy and England in the 17th century.

Centred around the captivating idea of the ground bass, the programme traces the exchange of musical ideas between two of Europe’s most vibrant musical cultures. Music by Claudio Monteverdi, Tarquinio Merula, Andrea Falconieri and Antonia Bembo sits alongside works by Henry Purcell, Matthew Locke, William Lawes, Henry Lawes, Nicholas Lanier and music from John Playford’s The English Dancing Master.

Featuring songs, sonatas, dances, lullabies and variations, Grounds for Exchange reveals how composers on either side of the Channel responded to one another’s ideas while developing distinctive national styles of their own.

Performed by Bellot Ensemble on period instruments including violins, viola da gamba, theorbo and harpsichord, this colourful programme offers a vivid journey through one of the most inventive and expressive periods in European musical history.
