Shadow & Splendour

Italian and English 17th Century Programme for 2 Violin, 2 Gambas & B.C.

Shadow & Splendour draws out the dramatic contrasts between 17th-century England and Italy—two cultures whose music reveals starkly different temperaments. The first half delves into the shadowed beauty of English consort music: introspective, poised, and intricately crafted by Lawes, Jenkins, Locke, and Purcell. After the interval, Italian composers take the stage with dazzling brilliance—Legrenzi, Merula, and Castello bring rhythmic fire and expressive daring, culminating in Farina’s theatrical Capriccio Stravagante. Bellot Ensemble invites you into a world where solemn grace meets vibrant spectacle—two voices, one rich musical tapestry.
