Bellot Ensemble opens the York Early Music Christmas Festival with The English Night: Music for a Winter’s Evening, an atmospheric programme of English consort music, song and dance.

Taking its inspiration from the hours after dark, the programme enters a more intimate world in which public ceremony gives way to private reflection. At its heart is a remarkable line of English musical invention, running from William Lawes and John Jenkins to Matthew Locke and Henry Purcell. Instrumental pieces sit beside songs that bring words and music into close focus.

Rather than a conventional carol concert, The English Night offers something more inward for the opening of the festival. It is a winter evening alive to the season while retaining the strange, vivid and theatrical character of this extraordinary repertory.

Bellot Ensemble is the current BBC Radio 3 New Generation Baroque Ensemble, supported by BBC Radio 3, the Royal College of Music and the National Centre for Early Music.
