We’re delighted to bring Heroines of the Seicento to Firth Hall as part of University of Sheffield Concerts.
Centred on women’s voices in seventeenth-century Italy, the programme brings together scenes from Francesca Caccini’s La liberazione di Ruggiero, intimate cantatas and rare monody by Barbara Strozzi, Antonia Bembo, Lucia Quinciani, Francesca Campana and Isabella Leonarda.
Instrumental sonatas and canzonas by Uccellini, Falconieri, Pandolfi Mealli, Merula and Marini inhabit the same world of character and expression. With soprano, strings and continuo, the programme moves between theatre and chamber music, offering contrast, colour and virtuosity throughout.
Soprano Mariana Rodrigues joins Edmund Taylor and Maxim Del Mar, violins; Jacob Garside, cello and viola da gamba; Daniel Murphy, theorbo; and Matthew Brown, harpsichord.
Bellot Ensemble is BBC Radio 3’s New Generation Baroque Ensemble, supported by the Royal College of Music and the National Centre for Early Music.
Doors open at 7pm. The performance begins at 7.30pm and comprises approximately 90 minutes of music with an interval.
Tickets: £19 full price; £11 concessions. Seating is unreserved, and under-14s must be accompanied by an adult.
